Founded in 1974, the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra (WSO) is a true “community” orchestra with over fifty devoted musicians of all ages, ethnicities and varying levels of musical experience. Under the direction of Music Director Stephen Blackwelder, the WSO presents four subscription concerts each season, as well as additional offerings of chamber music, community outreach and educational programs. Our main concerts are presented at Waukegan High School’s Trapp Auditorium — ticket prices are reasonable and there’s plenty of free parking. We invite the residents of Waukegan and surrounding Lake County to re-discover one of the area’s flagship cultural institutions.

JOIN US! Why play in an orchestra? Our members play with us for a variety of reasons—some of them remember how much they enjoyed music in high school or college. Some have always been in musical groups and others are just discovering what happens when a group of completely diverse individuals join their unique talents together. Some enjoy “losing themselves” in something larger than their everyday worries or responsibilities…and they often find themselves enlarged and enlivened in the process.
